Mathemagic 5 : Chapter 24 (Fractions, Decimals and Percentages)
Maths book can be found online via the CJFallon online resource bank. Follow these steps to access the book.
Primary > 5th class > Maths > Mathemagic> Mathemagic 5 > Online Book.
Complete the activities in this book at your own pace. Pages 101- 104 are revision of skills you have already been using at home.
Page 105 introduces finding a percentage of a given number.
Example: Find 50% of 300.

Find ½ of 300. (divide by the bottom, multiply by the top)
300 ÷ 2 = 150
50% of 300 is 150.
Check seesaw for further examples.

Answers to Last Week’s Maths Questions
. Change these decimals to percentages: eg 0.58 =58%
a) 0.35 =35%b) 0.78= 78% c) 0.42 = 42% d) 0.15 = 15% e) 0.90 = 90% f)0.07 =7%
g) 0.12=12%h) 0.09 =9% i) 0.60 =60% j) 0.44 =44% k) 0.68= 68% l) 0.74=74%
Change these percentages to decimals:eg 40% = 0.40
Sometimes the fractions can be broken down again to lowest terms eg 25% = 25/100 =1/4 and 40%=40/100 = 4/10 =2/5
g) 0.75 = /100 = 75/100=3/4h) 30% = 30/100= 3/10 i) 80% = 80/100= 8/10= 4/5 j) 50%= 50/100= 1/2 k) 20%= 20/100= 2/10= 1/5 l) 60%= 60/100=6/10=3/5
Answers to Problems of the week
What percentage of the books is sold? 72/100 =72% sold.
What percentage of the books is left? 100-72= 28 28% left

d) 0.20 = e)0.10= f) 0.18=
2.Change these percentages decimals:
Example: 5%= 5/100 =0.05 12%=12/100= 0.12 75%=75/100 =0.75
a) 15%= b) 19%= c) 35%=
d) 56%= e) 87%=f )9%=
3) Change these decimals to percentages and then to fractions in lowest terms.

a) 0.50 = b) 0.60= c) 0.1=
d) 0. 25 e) 0.9= f) 0.85=
4) Finding percentages of a number
Example: 50% of €40 50%=50/100 =1/2 ½ of € 40= € 20
20% of 60 20/100= 2/10 = 1/5 1/5 of 60 = 60÷ 5 = 12
Find a) 25% of €80 b) 10% 0f 70 c)50% of 120

School Daze
On a warm summer’s day,
I dream of the beach,
Instead of school,
Where teachers teach.
Riding down the crest of a wave,
Not in class, where ____________ misbehaves.
Riding along,
The pipline sweet,
Glued to the board,
By huge plates of meat.
The brilliant sunlight,
Keeps me warm,
As I speed along,
The curling form.
Just as I’m about to reach the land,
There comes a sound I know and understand.
“Wake up! And don’t swing on that chair!”
The teacher has come from out of nowhere!
