Tips to remember:  

• 1kg = 1000g     1/2kg = 500g     1/4kg = 250g   3/4k= 750g  
• If there are 1000g in a kilogram each gram is equal to 1 thousandth of a kilogram. 1g = 1/1000kg  
• When adding/ subtracting/ multiplying/ dividing ensure all measures are written in the same form.  

We cannot do the following: 5.685kg + 6758g + 4kg 286g =? 

Change all to the same form and then add. 5685g + 6758g + 4268g = ? 

• Remember order of operations. Complete any work inside brackets first.

•  Revise multiplication and division tables. X ÷ 7, x÷8, x÷9
•  See how quickly you can time yourself saying the multiples eg 7, 14, 21…..
•  Practise writing out the tables

Weight 

•  Find 5 things in the kitchen that weigh less than 1kg.(1000g).
•  Order them from lightest to heaviest. What is the weight of the lightest thing you can find in the kitchen?
•  Find the total weight of your 5 objects in Kg and g
•  Write down 3 things you can find that weigh more than 1kg.
•  With the help of an adult you might bake some buns/biscuits and practise weighing out the ingredients. Take some photos .

•  Add: a) 1.365 kg + 3.568 kg+ 1.090kg b) 2kg 370 g + 4, 407g + 3.568kg

( Remember to write the numbers underneath each other to add/ subtract and don’t fall into the traps!!!)

Multiply:

 Divide:

a) 7 .985 kg ÷ 5                               b) 85.33kg ÷ 7 = 

c) 136.80 ÷ 6  d) 73.64 kg ÷ 14

 

Problems to solve 

1) A man is delivering 15 boxes to a shop. Each box weighs 2.625kg. What is the total weight of the boxes? 

2) Aisling weighs 31.456 kg and her brother weighs 3.565 kg more than her. How much does her brother weigh? 

3) A shopkeeper bought 32 kg of potatoes at €1.25 per kg. How much did he pay ? 

4) The Kelly family were going on holiday. They had 30kg baggage allowance. Their clothes weighed 16.350 kg and other items weighed 8.500kg. How much more were they allowed to carry?

Read the following poem and complete the following activities:  

So Much for Secret Powers:  

Early last Tuesday I found I could fly,  

So I jumped off our roof and looped loops in the sky.  

Not a soul was astonished or impressed–  

They just called out loudly, “Come down and get dressed”.  

 

Departing for school on the following morning 

I turned into triplets without any warning.  

But no one was awestruck or taken aback –  

Mum simply observed, “That’s three lunches to pack.” 

 

While doing homework, succumbing to rage,  

I drew a live creature that hopped off the page.  

The only reaction from Dad was a mutter 

Od, “darn! There’s a dinosaur licking the butter”.  

 

At night, after dinner, my teeth all turned gold.  

So I yelled at my parents, “I’ve got gold teeth! Behold!” 

They barely glanced up from the Tv and said,  

“Just make sure you brush them each night, before bed”.  

But on Thursday, at breakfast, at last they took note.  

Dad stopped pouring coffee and Mum cleared her throat.  

“How strange”, they both murmured, “how curious, how weird-  

Vicki, don’t go to school till you shave off your bread”.
